On 19–21 November 2018, the latest Archaeological Session was held in the State Hermitage.
These annual gatherings traditionally assess the work accomplished by expeditions in the past field season and outline plans for the coming year. Archaeology is one of the main directions in the Hermitage’s activities. Twenty-nine expeditions are currently operating in the museum. They carry out excavations in various parts of Russia, in the North-West, in Central Russia and in the South, in the Crimea and Northern Caucasus, in Siberia and Transbaikalia, and also in the countries of Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Ukraine and Italy. In the future there are plans for members of the Hermitage staff to participate in expeditions in Sudan, Qatar, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Armenia.
Opening the conference, Mikhail Piotrovsky, General Director of the State Hermitage, reviewed the main problems facing the archaeologists today. They include working in construction areas, the creation of separate storage facilities for archaeological materials, a system for transferring archaeological finds to museums and the development of underwater archaeology. To tackle those issues, it is important for the archaeological community to have a common united position.
